A Society at the Brink of Collapse

The social fabric of our society is deteriorating at meteoric pace, creating uncertainties among everyone in the society. These include breaking up of families, spread of substance abuse at epidemic proportion, increase in crimes against women, children, elderly and strained relations among the members of the society leading to a divided society.

According to Haveeru (May 2008) half of the marriages end up in divorce, which in the sense means that we are experiencing an increase in number of divorce rates in the country. Due to these break ups we the families, which is comprised of our society is broken up into pieces. These create generations of children who are from broken families and some of them become statistics of drug abuse and crimes.

The other side of the coin is increase in crimes that has taken young lives in our society. Gang fights on the streets, rape, robbery, and mugging are common in this closely nit Islamic society. One can wonder where the discipline of our society gone over the years. What has caused these upheavals and where have we gone wrong in the past decades?

Then the substance abuse which has caused uproar in our society by reaching it to endemic proportion. This has affected every family of the society leading to chaos and disintegration among those who use it and others in the family. Compelling issue of reversing back the situation seems a long way away. Where have the authorities of the past decades gone?

These are issues which are haunting the society at large and straining the relations among the families, friends and neighbours. These generations of our future are so embedded with crimes, substance abuse, and shattered families. Where could we turn for help? It seems no one cares about it and the society is left in peril.

However, I stand to defend family values, curbing crimes and substance abuse.
